SPOTLIGHT ON SPEED: KORBYNN STALLBAUMER

Korbynn Stallbaumer is no stranger to spirited points battles in Heartland Park Topeka’s E.T. Bracket Drag Racing Series, winning a Sportsman track championship and also posting second and third-place finishes over the past several seasons.

As Stallbaumer closes in on what could be another title, she is determined to concentrate on what she can control on the track and not anything else.

“It’s been a good year so far, but as for the whole points thing, I try not to pay too close of attention to it,” Stallbaumer said. “I definitely just do one race and one round at a time and see how it goes.”

So far that strategy has worked well, with Stallbaumer holding a 294-point lead in the Sportsman standings over Kelli Siebert as the season begins to wind down.

If  Stallbaumer is able to close out her championship run, it would add to what has already been a big year for the Wakarusa racer, who recently earned her college degree from the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth.

“I’m done with school, graduated, and right now I’m just kind of helping out with the family business (Land Air Express),” said Stallbaumer, who also played college basketball for the Spires.

With her schooling complete, Stallbaumer could ostensibly have more time to race, and perhaps move up in class, but she said she’s content to remain in the Sportsman division and continue to race her 1983 Chevy pickup.

“The truck’s only really able to do bracket racing, and if I were to do any more I’d have to get in my brothers’ cars and I don’t think they’re ready to get out of them,” she said. “So I’ll just stick to bracket racing whenever there’s races in town.”
